So, imagine you are playing rush, and you see right away a ton of snipers and mortar when you spawn.  You might think to yourself, I am so glad I’m on the defending side, but then you realize you’re not so you settle in for several minutes of fail because you know that’s what is going to happen.  Somebody joins your squad and you notice that they have the recon icon, ok, so you send them a message, “Don’t mind if you play recon as long as you get down there and help the squad plant”.  They respond with, “Nice way to talk to a team mate,” to which you say something like, “You want to be in my squad I need you to play the objective like the rest of us.”  Well he doesn’t so you boot him to make room for someone that might actually want to help the squad.  So this Prissy, or Pretty, or Percy, not sure cause he spells his name with a number in the middle rejoins and then you see him playing a little more aggressive so you let him stay, but your team still loses.  Go figure, there’s only about 6 of you rushing the objective.

Round two, now you are on defense so you say, “You all know this is the part where we defend and diffuse right nubs?”  Yes, you are harsh I know but you are tired of COD freaks playing this game like all game types are TDM.  Instantly Prissy, who is still in your squad, gets all bent out of shape, talking about his score compared to yours, and how he did so well.  (high score on losing team = smartest kid on short bus)  You go back and forth trying to explain that getting a lot of points in rush does not equal helping your team win.  Then all of a sudden he gets defense, the sniper nub gets defended by someone named Silent35.  COD players infiltrating in some sort of conspiracy to destroy the fun of our game, you think?  Then Silent35 says that you are stupid and that you only care about your stats…yes, that’s what he says.  You recommend rushing the objective on rush, and it’s only your stats you care about.  You look at your stats, which aren’t that great because you die a lot playing the frakin objective, and wonder what the hell is wrong with him.

Anyway, you might think this is some fantastical, hypothetical, but this is exactly what happened to me yesterday.  So, I thought maybe some people are just ignorant.  Maybe they don’t understand how this game type works.  Here is your guide, for those that don’t remember, never played BC2, or came over from COD.

Rush is a game type where one team (the attackers) must run, walk, or drive to the enemy base to plant a bomb on one of two objectives defended by the other team (the defenders).  Once planted the attackers have to either keep the defenders from diffusing the bomb, or run away and hope that the defenders don’t care.  If the attacking team is successful in taking out both objectives (M-Coms) then a new base opens up with two new objectives further down the line.  There are anywhere between 4 and 6 bases if memory serves.  If the attacking team takes the final base they win.  If the defenders hold out at any base until the attackers run out of tickets then the defenders win.  This is important:  DEFENDERS HAVE INFINITE TICKETS, YOU CANNOT WIN THIS GAME TYPE BY KILLING AS MANY DEFENDERS AS POSSIBLE.

Sounds pretty simple, but it’s not.  The defenders have a distinct advantage, since they can hide all over that base, don’t need to move up, and only have to shoot people trying to plant bombs.  The attackers have their work cut out for them.  Two tactics seem to work very well, depending on your team.  One, run like your butt is on fire, everyone all at once, get in as fast as you can and plant and hope for the best.  I have been able to do this solo, and have actually found it easy to run past enemy defenders, if I don’t shoot a single round, and plant right under their noses.  The solo bit doesn’t always work, it’s risky, and in the end they will catch on so it only works on the first base in most cases.  It’s better if your entire team makes a beeline for an objective, giving the enemy more targets than they can shoot, at least a few will get through.  Sure, this doesn’t do your KDR any favors, but who cares?  The second method is for your team to move like a real life military unit, moving and shooting, taking cover and using suppressive fire to make steady progress toward the objective.  This method works very well, and is kinder on the KDR, but it requires a lot of coordination and a cooperative team.

What doesn’t work on the attacking side?  Sniping.  The enemy doesn’t run out of tickets.  You can snipe them all day and you will never win.  It doesn’t even help your team because they just respawn right back in the base to defend.  I hear, all the time, the excuse: “Well, I’m taking out their snipers so everyone can get down there.”  Well look around mister helpful sniper.  No one is getting down there because more than half the team is playing with the same mentality.  It’s not helping the team, the defenders just respawn and keep defending.  The best tactic against snipers when you know where they are is to give them more targets than they can kill, faster than they can kill them.  The defenders can’t possibly have enough snipers if the entire attacking team rushes the base at once.

A side note, mortars:   Mortars are decent on the attacking team if there are few and they know their job.  There should be at least 2 or 3.  One mortar is ok but all in all a waste, four is too many.  This requires some coordination, but one of those mortars should be smoke, giving the attacking team cover to get to the objective.  The other two should be HE rounds, and really until the M-Com is planted they need to be looking for enemy mortar and snipers.  Once planted, they need to alternate pounding that M-Com until it blows up.  There is no reason and M-Com should be diffused when the attacking team has a mortar or two.

Finally, defenders.  Your job is simple, defend and diffuse.  If you are running away, ahead of the base, or sitting too far back to diffuse once planted, you are doing it wrong.  If you think “Well there are enough people to diffuse, I’ll just go up on this here tower so far away from any objective I couldn’t possibly get there in time”, you are doing it wrong.  Defend and diffuse, period.  Snipers on this side are even useful as long as they are close enough to run to the M-Com and diffuse should the attackers plant.
